Husker Du?

• Waiting at Detroit Metro Airport while our plane was repaired and flying out on Friday the 13th?
• Wondering if you would go hungry at language school in Padborg because you were afraid to ask for the food in Danish?
• Getting your first mail from home?
• Riding the train for the first time?
• Not being able to ride your bike home after your first Tuborg?
• Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the host families?
• Real candles on the Christmas tree?
• The Beach Boys concert in Tivoli?
• The toga party in the youth hostel?
• Being thrown out of your English exam because you spoke "American" English?
• Making the guards laugh at Rosenborg Castle?
• Rebild?
• Needing three people to stand on your suitcase so you could get it closed before you came home?
• Dreaming about your American friends, but they all spoke Danish?
• Swearing not to forget a minute of the experience and to go back as soon as you could?

I remember all these things and a million more. My year in Denmark was one of the most amazing times in my life. Over the years I have wondered what happened to those I shared some of those experiences with. Sadly, as time went by, I lost contact with everyone. I volunteered to be the Alumni Class Contact to try to track down our class so we can reconnect and share old memories and hopefully make some new ones. Also, I have always had a secret wish for a reunion of sorts. Anybody game for meeting in the new Legoland in California someday?

My name is Debbie (Seibert) Skarsten. I am from Ohio. During our year in Denmark, I lived on a farm in southern Sjælland with my family of three sisters and a brother. I had a terrific view of the water, a church, and the next island from my bedroom window. I have been back to visit only twice. The first time I took my husband (who happens to be of Norwegian background), American mom and brother. It was really strange to introduce my mom to my mom! Now I have six children (hence the email address luckymom@insight.rr.com) . As babies, I gave each of them a small Royal Copenhagen plate of the Little Mermaid that came with a promise to go see the real thing someday. Last summer I made good on the first such promise when I took my oldest daughter to Denmark. We had a wonderful time and I look forward to taking each of my other children in the coming years.

If you would like to add some pictures to our yearbook or share some stories, please let me know. Maybe we should all add a "then" and "now" picture or add a line to the "Husker Du" list? I know we all have great stores to share. I look forward to hearing yours!
