ABOUT YFU-UKRAINE

YFU-Ukraine was founded in 1992. The National Office is located in Kiev, the capital of the country. Volunteers, most of whom are YFU returnees, contributed a lot to the growth of the organization. YFU-Ukraine is registered as a non-profit educational organization.

Programs

All programs start in the second half of August

  1. Academic Semester Program for 15-17 year old high school students
  2. School Teacher's Assistant semester program is open for 17-20 year old high school students and recent graduates from the USA and Germany
  3. Russian Language Program at Kiev Linguistic University is open for 17-20 year old high school graduates

School System

Schooling begins at age 6. Presently, Ukraine has 11-year school system, of which 9-year schooling is compulsory, though a transition to 12-year system has already started nationwide.

Grades 10 and 11 are highly academic (specializing in Sciences, Economics, Foreign Languages, etc.) and leading to a university education.

Primary school – 1-4 grades

Middle school – 5-9 grades

High school – 10-11 grades

School year starts on September 1. The number of required subjects varies from 12 to 16 depending on a school, very few of them may be optional. Classes finish at the end of May, then students take exams in June.

Exchange students are placed in Lyceum (10th or 11th grade) where English is taught from 1st to 11th grade and German or French is studied from 4th grade as a second foreign language.

YFU Support System

All students are placed in Kiev where the National Office is located, so they are supported directly by the office and by a group of trained volunteers who are YFU alumni. Cell phone number is available for emergencies 24 hours a day.

Arrival Orientation (2 days, a tour of Kiev included)

Mid-term (3-day joint trip)

Re-entry orientation (1day) is held a week prior to departure
