Each day worldwide, YFU conducts its exchange programs via direct contact between independent national organizations in over 50 countries. These autonomous organizations represent the international community network of YFU and can be contacted directly by clicking the map link on this page.

Other YFU international activities are carried out by a volunteer International Advisory Council and a professional staff known as the International Secretariat. Under the auspices of a separate organization called YFU International Educational Services, the International Secretariat was established by the YFU community as a neutral organization to facilitate the operation and development of YFU organizations worldwide and strengthen the vitality and solidarity of the YFU network.

The International Advisory Council is the only internationally elected body of YFU. Based on YFU’s Agreement on International Cooperation and Consensus Building, the Council is designated as official advisor to all YFU national organizations. Via the professional staff of the International Secretariat, they advise the YFU community about issues of international concern, development, contingency, planning and program policies.

YFU organizations around the world subscribe to a set of basic operating and philosophic standards that embody YFU’s commitment to conducting high quality programs. The standards set the basic requirements that YFU programs must meet. They balance universal and local requirements; they establish the areas of activity for YFU organizations and fundamental qualitative expectations, but remain sensitive to individual country perspectives, interests, needs, cultural considerations, degrees of economic feasibility and differing values.
